About the Board

The Zoning Board of Adjustment functions as an appeal board. The board is responsible for holding public hearings and making determinations where it is alleged there is error on any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by the building official in the enforcement of the zoning ordinances. The board has the following powers:

  • To hear and decide appeals where it is alleged there is error on any order, requirement, decision, or determination made by the building official in the enforcement of the Zoning Ordinance
  • To permit variance from the terms of the zoning ordinance as may be necessary to secure appropriate development of a parcel of land which possesses special conditions such that it cannot be appropriately developed with a literal enforcement of the provisions of the ordinance
  • To permit the reconstruction, extension, or enlargement or a building occupied by a nonconforming use
  • To require the discontinuance of nonconforming uses of land or structure under any plan whereby the full value of the structure and facilities can be amortized
